A serious incident of violence was reported during the Nagar Panchayat elections in Bhikhiwind town of Punjab’s Tarn Taran. The clash allegedly took place during a campaign meeting being held at the residence of a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate from Ward No. 12. Former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha’s son, Gauravdeep Singh Valtoha, was also reportedly present at the spot during the incident.
According to complainant Sarabjit Singh, his wife is contesting the municipal elections as a candidate of the Shiromani Akali Dal. A political meeting related to the election campaign was underway at their house when a large group of people allegedly gathered outside and created chaos.
The complainant alleged that the attackers were armed with sharp-edged weapons and vandalized the main gate of the house. A motorcycle parked outside the residence was also reportedly damaged during the attack.
The complaint reportedly names Gurjant Singh Janta, Rajbir Singh Raju, Sajan Singh, Nihal Singh, Jashandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh Gopi, Gopal Singh Gupala, Gurpreet Singh, and Balwinder Kaur, along with nearly 70 unidentified persons.
Following the incident, tension spread across the area, with local residents expressing fear and concern. Police from Bhikhiwind police station reached the spot soon after receiving information and initiated an investigation.
Punjab Police have registered a case under various sections, and efforts are currently underway to identify and arrest the accused involved in the violence.
