Serious concerns over the safety of women resident doctors have emerged from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, after a junior resident doctor from the Psychiatry Department was accused of stalking, attempting to forcibly enter a female colleague’s hostel room, and engaging in inappropriate behaviour.
According to the complaint submitted through the department’s Head of Department (HOD), the accused doctor allegedly entered the girls’ hostel on two separate occasions—May 18 and May 20—and attempted to force his way into the complainant’s room. The woman doctor also alleged that the accused displayed obscene gestures and had been persistently following her for an extended period.
Sources said that during the alleged attempt to enter the room, the woman doctor was not present inside. However, the incident has raised serious questions about hostel security and the safety of female residents within the medical college campus.
Following the allegations, the victim’s parents lodged a formal complaint with the police, prompting the institution to expedite its internal inquiry. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has reportedly completed its investigation, while administrative authorities continue to examine the matter.
The incident has sparked concern over security arrangements at the institution and highlighted the need for stronger measures to ensure the safety of women doctors on campus.
