A 20-year-old youth was brutally stabbed to death by a group of assailants in Chandigarh’s Daddwa area on Tuesday evening. The victim, identified as Suraj, was returning home on his motorcycle when five youths allegedly stopped him and attacked him with knives and sharp-edged weapons.
Suraj sustained multiple serious injuries and was rushed to GMCH-32 by a PCR team after a local woman called the 108 ambulance service. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have registered a murder case against unidentified attackers. After a 55-second video of the incident surfaced online, investigators intensified efforts to identify and arrest the accused. Officials said some suspects have already been identified, and raids are underway to nab them.
According to police, officers from the Daddwa police outpost, Industrial Area police station, DSP office, and other senior officials reached the crime scene soon after the incident. Mobile forensic experts and a team from the Central Science Forensic Laboratory in Sector 36 collected blood samples and other evidence from the spot. The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The disturbing video reportedly shows the attackers dragging Suraj by his hair and repeatedly stabbing him in the chest, stomach, and back, while some accused were also seen kicking him in the face. In the footage, Suraj can be heard pleading with the attackers to spare him, but the assault continued.
Eyewitnesses said Suraj tried to escape but collapsed a short distance away. The attackers allegedly returned and stabbed him again before fleeing the scene.
Suraj’s father, Mukesh, said the family still does not understand why his son was targeted. He also expressed anger over people recording videos of the attack from rooftops instead of trying to save him.
Family members said Suraj worked as a helper in a theatre company in Chandigarh and was returning home after duty at the time of the attack. His cousin Ankit said the family received a call from Suraj’s friend Rahul informing them about the assault, after which they rushed to the hospital.
According to the family, Suraj had a twin brother named Dheeraj, who is just one minute older than him and works in an automobile company in the Industrial Area.
