State team captaincy experience expected to help in WPL, aims to carry forward the legacy left by Meg Lanning
Indian cricket star Jemimah Rodrigues looks fully prepared to take on a new and crucial role in WPL 2026 as she leads Delhi Capitals for the first time. Jemimah believes that her experience of captaining her state team will play a key role in handling this major responsibility. Delhi Capitals have reached the finals in all three previous editions of the Women’s Premier League but are yet to lift the trophy. Under Jemimah’s leadership, the team will be aiming to finally cross that hurdle this season.
Jemimah was one of the standout performers in India’s recent triumph at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, where she smashed a magnificent century against Australia in the semi-final. Since the inception of the WPL, she has been a vital part of the Delhi Capitals lineup and has played a significant role in guiding the team to three consecutive finals.
Ahead of WPL 2026, the franchise took a major decision by parting ways with Australian legend Meg Lanning, who had captained the side in the first three seasons. Jemimah acknowledged Lanning’s immense influence on the team, stating that the culture and high standards set by the former captain will continue to inspire the squad. She revealed that she learned a great deal from Lanning, especially about leadership and decision-making.
Speaking about her new role, Jemimah said that added responsibility brings out the best in her. She feels that her domestic captaincy experience has helped her understand how to manage players, stay calm under pressure, and take tough calls during crucial moments — skills she hopes to apply in the WPL as well.
Delhi Capitals will begin their WPL 2026 campaign against defending champions Mumbai Indians. Having lost two finals to Mumbai in the first three editions, the team will be eager to turn the tables this time. With renewed energy, strong support staff, and fresh leadership, Delhi Capitals will be hoping that this season finally ends with them lifting the WPL trophy.
