Bowling changes depend on conditions and batters’ approach, says Arshdeep after five-wicket haul in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh believes that success in modern cricket depends on a bowler’s ability to think one step ahead of the batter. He said that changes in bowling are largely dictated by match conditions and the mindset of the opposition batters. According to Arshdeep, adapting quickly is essential, especially when batters look to attack and settle in at the crease.
Arshdeep recently delivered an impressive performance for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, picking up five wickets against Sikkim. He finished with figures of 5 for 34 in his 10-over spell, showcasing his ability to swing the ball along with consistent pace. The performance further strengthened his case for national selection. However, despite his strong domestic outing, the left-arm pacer was not included in India’s playing XI for the opening ODI against New Zealand.
Speaking ahead of the match on the sidelines, Arshdeep said he was pleased with his start to the new year and is focused on maintaining consistency. He added that his aim is to continue doing what worked well for him last year and to enjoy cricket without putting unnecessary pressure on himself.
When asked about his short-term and long-term goals, Arshdeep said he does not set rigid targets. Instead, he prefers to stay in the present and give his best in every opportunity, regardless of the format. He emphasized that for him, enjoying the game is more important than chasing milestones, whether he is playing with a red ball, pink ball, or white ball.
Explaining his approach to adapting during a match, Arshdeep said that if batters try to dominate, a bowler must quickly adjust length and strategy. He pointed out that in today’s fast-paced game, batters adapt very quickly, so bowlers must respond even faster. Thinking ahead of the batter, he said, is what keeps a bowler in the contest.
New Zealand are currently touring India for a three-match ODI series followed by five T20Is. The T20 series will serve as preparation for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to begin on February 7.
