Punjab Government has released more than ₹1,583 crore under its social security schemes during the current financial year to provide financial assistance to senior citizens, widows, destitute women, orphaned and dependent children, and persons with disabilities.
According to the state government, the funds are being disbursed on time to ensure that lakhs of eligible beneficiaries receive financial support to meet their daily needs without delay.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said on Monday that the state has allocated a total budget of ₹6,131.91 crore for social security and welfare schemes in the 2026-27 financial year. The allocation aims to provide regular financial assistance to economically weaker and vulnerable sections of society.
The minister said that nearly 36 lakh beneficiaries across Punjab are currently receiving benefits under these welfare programs. She added that the government is committed to ensuring that every eligible person receives financial assistance promptly and without unnecessary inconvenience.
Dr. Baljit Kaur informed that out of the total amount released so far, more than ₹1,048 crore has been directly transferred to beneficiaries as old-age pension.
Additionally, over ₹535 crore has been disbursed under various social security schemes for widows, destitute women, orphaned and dependent children, and persons with disabilities.
Emphasising the government's commitment to public welfare, the minister said social security is not merely a budgetary provision but a significant responsibility towards the state's vulnerable sections. She added that the department has made the benefit distribution process transparent and efficient to ensure timely financial assistance reaches every eligible beneficiary.
