Tech billionaire Elon Musk has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) could surpass humans in computers, the internet and digital work by the end of next year.
According to Musk, AI is rapidly advancing in areas such as digital data processing, software development and coding. He believes the technology could soon be capable of handling complex digital tasks much faster and more efficiently than humans.
However, Musk clarified that AI's growing capabilities are currently expected to remain largely confined to the digital and virtual world. He said machines are not yet capable of replacing humans in physically demanding jobs such as manufacturing, infrastructure development and house construction.
Musk also suggested that people do not need to fear a science-fiction-style takeover by robots at this stage. While AI may become highly capable in digital environments, physical-world tasks still require capabilities that machines have yet to fully develop.
Musk also recalled a warning made by Google co-founder Larry Page during a conversation nearly a decade ago. Page had warned that AI could eventually become capable of identifying software security vulnerabilities and using them to hack systems on its own.
Concerns over autonomous AI agents and cybersecurity have also grown recently. Guillermo Roche, CEO of Versel, has reportedly warned about the potential for autonomous AI systems to breach and exploit digital networks, highlighting the growing cybersecurity risks associated with increasingly capable AI.
