The recovery of three AK-47 rifle magazines containing 82 cartridges near the Jaito-Bathinda bypass in Kotkapura has triggered concern within the police department.
The ammunition was found abandoned near a canal distributary, and the old dates marked on the cartridges have prompted investigators to examine the possibility of a link to the era of militancy in Punjab.
However, the actual source of the ammunition and the circumstances under which it reached the location are yet to be established.
According to information, a police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurjit Singh of Kotkapura City Police Station was conducting checking near the Jaito-Bathinda bypass when it received information that cartridges had been concealed along the unpaved embankment of a canal distributary near Rabb Wale Khoo.
Acting on the tip-off, the police team searched the location and recovered three magazines containing a total of 82 cartridges of 7.62 mm calibre.
The old dates marked on the cartridges have become a key aspect of the investigation. Police are examining whether the ammunition had been deliberately concealed at the spot or brought from somewhere else and discarded there. Investigators are also working to establish its background and determine how long it may have remained at the location.
DSP Kotkapura Sanjeev Kumar said that a case had been registered against an unidentified person under the relevant legal provisions. He added that a detailed investigation was underway to ascertain the origin of the recovered ammunition and establish other facts related to the case.
The police have yet to confirm whether the recovered ammunition has any connection with Punjab's militancy period. The investigation is expected to shed light on its origin and the circumstances surrounding its recovery.
