Amritsar : Vigilance SSP Suspended on Corruption Charges, Case Linked to ₹55Cr Development Tender in Amritsar

Action Taken After Complaint by Senior IAS Officer; SSP Had Led Bikram Majithia’s Arrest Team

Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh-

Once again, a major administrative action has been taken in Punjab over allegations of corruption. Lakhbir Singh, SSP of the Vigilance Bureau posted in Amritsar, has been suspended following serious corruption charges. The action is linked to a ₹55 crore development tender in Amritsar. According to media reports, a construction company had first raised complaints in the matter, after which a senior IAS officer also lodged a formal complaint. Based on these allegations, the government decided to suspend the Vigilance SSP.

Sources say the ₹55 crore development project came under scrutiny during the investigation process, where allegations of irregularities were raised. The complaint claimed that the investigation was not conducted in a fair and transparent manner and that certain parties were being deliberately favored. As questions were raised over the direction and credibility of the probe, the matter reached senior administrative levels, leading to action against Lakhbir Singh.

However, no official notification regarding the suspension has been made public by the government so far. Administrative sources claim that the allegations were found serious during the preliminary assessment, prompting the suspension. A detailed inquiry is now expected, and more developments may emerge as the investigation progresses.

Lakhbir Singh was appointed as SSP Vigilance in March 2025. Notably, he had earlier led the team that arrested senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia on June 25, 2025. At the time, his role was widely seen as part of the government’s strong stance against corruption. However, his suspension within just nine months of appointment has raised several questions.

This is not the first instance of action against a senior police officer in Amritsar. About two months ago, Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh was also suspended. The back-to-back suspensions indicate that the Punjab government is adopting a strict approach toward ensuring transparency and accountability in the police and administrative system.

The suspension has triggered intense discussions in political and administrative circles. While opposition parties are linking the move to internal conflicts within the government, ruling party supporters are calling it part of the government’s “zero tolerance” policy against corruption. The final outcome will become clearer once the investigation report and the government’s official statement are released.
