CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Press Club has condemned the police action against Kurukshetra-based journalist Kamal Saini, who regularly contributes as a district reporter from NDTV.

Kamal Saini was reporting from Ambedkar Bhawan in Kurukshetra on April 16 when farmers were protesting against Haryana BJP president Om Prakash Dhankar. When Saini was recording the farmers protest, the cops deployed there dragged and assaulted him, despite knowing the fact that the field reporter was simply doing his job.

"When I was simply recording the protest from the venue, cops pounced on me and tried to even snatch my phone. They also manhandled me despite telling them that I am a journalist. Though we have given a proper complaint to the police, no FIR has been registered even after more than 24 hours of the incident," said Kamal Saini, who regularly contributes as a district reporter from NDTV.

The Chandigarh Press Club demands the registration of a criminal case against the erring cops and ensure that journalists reporting from the ground are not targeted. The entire media fraternity of the region expresses solidarity for the journalists concerned.

The Chandigarh Press Club is also giving representation to Haryana Chief Minister and other officials concerned in the above matter.
