The Central University of Punjab (CU Punjab), in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, successfully conducted a two-day Capacity Building Workshop on Household Waste Management – Segregation and Treatment from August 12–13, 2025. The workshop was held to celebrate World Environment day under the Environment Education Programme and Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Sustainable Environment), with support from the Institution’s Innovation Council, CU Punjab.
Over 150 students from four local schools, including Government Senior Secondary School, Ghudda, and Jhumba, Guru Gobind Singh Public school, Balluana and Punjabi University college, Ghudda, participated alongside university students, gaining hands-on exposure to sustainable waste management practices.
The workshop was led by faculty members of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, headed by Prof. Yogalakshmi K.N., and included Prof. V.K. Garg, Prof. Sunil Mittal, Dr. Dhanya M.S., Dr. Prafulla Kumar Sahoo and Dr. Ajay Kumar. Participants received hands-on training on plastic waste segregation and thickness measurement; compost and vermicompost preparation from household biodegradable waste and segregation of compostable and non-compostable and recyclable materials. Innovative waste utilization methods were also demonstrated, showcasing products such as biochar, compost, and handcrafted items made from plastic waste.
The initiative aimed to sensitize students and participants to environmentally responsible practices, equipping them with practical skills to promote sustainable lifestyles and contribute meaningfully to environmental conservation at the community level.
