Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has rescheduled his upcoming Delhi concert under the ‘Aura India Tour’, moving the show from November 1 to October 30. The concert will now take place at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium in the national capital. Diljit announced the change through social media following an appeal by the Punjabi Promotion Council, which highlighted the historical sensitivity associated with November 1 due to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence.
Why Was the November 1 Date Questioned?
The request to change the concert date was made by the Punjabi Promotion Council. Its president, Jaswant Singh, wrote to Diljit Dosanjh and his team, urging them to reconsider the schedule in view of the painful memories associated with the day for the Sikh community.
The council pointed out that November 1 holds deep historical significance because of the anti-Sikh violence that erupted following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. It appealed to the singer to consider the sentiments of those affected by the violence while scheduling the event.
1984 Violence Remains a Painful Chapter
The assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 was followed by widespread anti-Sikh violence in several parts of the country. The violence claimed numerous lives and left many families devastated. Decades later, the events continue to evoke painful memories among survivors, affected families and members of the Sikh community.
Against this backdrop, the Punjabi Promotion Council requested that the concert be moved to a different date to avoid coinciding with the anniversary period.
Council Clarifies It Is Not Opposing the Concert
In its letter, the Punjabi Promotion Council praised Diljit Dosanjh for promoting Punjabi music and culture on international platforms. The organisation acknowledged his contribution to bringing Punjabi entertainment to a global audience.
The council also clarified that its appeal was not intended to oppose the singer or disrupt his concert. Instead, it sought to ensure that the feelings of the Sikh community and families affected by the 1984 violence were taken into consideration while finalising the event schedule.
With the revised schedule, Diljit’s Delhi concert will now be held on October 30 instead of November 1. Fans planning to attend the show will need to take note of the revised date and make arrangements accordingly.
