Gulf shipping disruptions delay Dukes ball supply, forcing teams to ration resources
The upcoming English cricket season is set to begin under unexpected pressure, as a shortage of Dukes balls threatens to disrupt preparations for both domestic and international matches. With the season scheduled to start on April 3, concerns are mounting among officials and teams over limited availability of the essential equipment.
The issue has emerged due to ongoing disruptions in Gulf shipping routes, which have significantly delayed the transportation of cricket balls from South Asia to the United Kingdom. These delays are linked to geopolitical tensions in the region, impacting freight movement and creating a bottleneck in supply chains.
Currently, stock levels of Dukes balls are reported to be nearly half of what is typically required at the start of the season. This has forced authorities to consider rationing supplies, particularly in the early stages of the County Championship, where all 18 first-class counties rely on these balls. Teams may need to carefully manage usage until fresh stock arrives.
Dilip Jajodia, owner of British Cricket Balls Ltd, the company responsible for manufacturing Dukes balls, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. He pointed out that while there is no shortage in production, transportation challenges have created a major hurdle. According to him, finished balls are ready in factories, but airline freight disruptions have slowed their delivery.
The crisis has also led to a sharp increase in transportation costs. Freight charges have reportedly tripled due to safety concerns and rerouted flights avoiding conflict zones. This has added further strain on the already delayed supply chain.
An official from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) described the situation as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for stronger logistical planning in the future. The manufacturing process itself adds to the complexity, as Dukes balls involve multiple stages across different countries before reaching the field.
With just weeks to go before the first matches, cricket authorities are now focused on managing available resources efficiently, ensuring that the season begins smoothly despite the ongoing challenges.
