In response to rising temperatures, Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir has implemented a comprehensive summer diet and cooling strategy to safeguard animals from heat-related stress during peak summer conditions.

Under the guidance of Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, the zoo has introduced special heat-management measures across different species groups. As part of the plan, bears are being provided nearly 100 kg of ice cubes daily to help regulate body temperature throughout the summer season.

To further reduce heat stress, animals such as bears, monkeys, and elephants are being given fresh watermelon to maintain hydration and natural cooling.

To address electrolyte loss in extreme heat, Glucon-D powder is being mixed into the drinking water of carnivorous and omnivorous animals, helping maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration.

The zoo has also revised its seasonal diet plan. Bananas have been replaced with papaya for better digestion and higher water content. For herbivores and birds, cabbage leaves have been substituted with spinach, while radish has been replaced with cucumber to enhance hydration benefits.

Officials said these steps are part of the zoo’s standard summer preparedness protocol and are being closely monitored by veterinary experts and animal care teams to ensure the well-being of all resident animals during the harsh summer months.
