Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Punjab, including Mohali, Pathankot and Gurdaspur, on Wednesday, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Chandigarh also witnessed light showers, while cool winds swept across Mohali and Jalandhar, with cloudy skies prevailing in several parts of the state.

In Pathankot, heavy rain on the very first day of schools reopening disrupted normal life, with many students unable to reach school in the morning due to waterlogged roads. The city received nearly five hours of continuous rainfall, leaving several roads submerged under 3 to 4 feet of water. The Khaddi Nallah also overflowed, causing water to flow over a bridge and affecting traffic movement.

In Jalandhar, strong winds uprooted a eucalyptus tree on Court Road, which fell onto parked vehicles, damaging two cars.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the entire Punjab and Chandigarh region, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. Rain has also been forecast for Chandigarh and the Tricity region until noon on Wednesday.

The weather department said the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Punjab within the next two to three days. It has also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places across Punjab on July 2, 3, 4 and 6, while Chandigarh is likely to witness heavy rain at some locations between July 2 and July 6.

Meanwhile, Punjab's average maximum temperature dropped by 1.6 degrees Celsius, although it still remains 2.3 degrees above normal. On Tuesday, Faridkot was the hottest district in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius
