Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday heard the petition related to the FIR registered against senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Majithia at Majitha police station in Amritsar. During the hearing, the Punjab government sought additional time to file its reply before the court. Accepting the request, the court granted time till Tuesday, and the matter will now be heard again tomorrow.
On Sunday, the High Court had issued notices to the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Amritsar Rural, and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Majitha police station on a petition filed by the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Majithia has been accused of allegedly entering Majitha police station forcibly and securing the release of an accused, Jobanjeet Singh. The FIR further alleges that Majithia and his associates attempted to snatch mobile phones from police personnel during the incident.
Following the registration of the case, Punjab Police conducted raids at six locations linked to Majithia and his close associates in Amritsar and Chandigarh on Monday. After he could not be traced, police issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) late in the evening to prevent him from leaving the country.
In a related development, the Punjab government also removed Amritsar Rural SSP Suhail Qasim Mir from his post on Monday evening. No official reason has been publicly stated for the transfer, though the move came amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Majitha police station incident.
