The Meteorological Department on Saturday released its forecast for the 2026 southwest monsoon season, indicating that Himachal Pradesh is likely to receive below-normal rainfall in most regions during the June–September period.
According to the forecast, seasonal rainfall across India is expected to be around 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a possible variation of four percent on either side. Based on data from 1971 to 2020, the country's average seasonal rainfall stands at 87 centimeters.
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla stated that rainfall in most parts of Himachal Pradesh is likely to remain below normal, defined as less than 92 percent of the long-term average.
However, some areas of Kinnaur district are expected to receive normal rainfall. Parts of Lahaul-Spiti district and the northern regions of Chamba district are also likely to witness normal monsoon precipitation.
The forecast raises concerns for agriculture, water resources, and hydropower generation in the hill state, where monsoon rainfall plays a crucial role in sustaining livelihoods and replenishing water reserves.
