India has entered an exclusive group of nations possessing operational-level Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) capability, joining the ranks of the United States, Russia, Israel, and China. The achievement marks a major milestone in India's strategic defence preparedness and indigenous military technology.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three consecutive flight tests on June 10 and 11, demonstrating the effectiveness of its multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system. The trials showcased the system's ability to detect, intercept, and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before they reach their targets.
According to the demonstration, the advanced defence shield is capable of countering a wide range of ballistic missile threats, including Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)-class targets, significantly enhancing India's strategic security.
The indigenous BMD system is designed to intercept enemy missiles in mid-air, neutralizing them before impact and providing an additional layer of protection against long-range missile attacks.
On June 13, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared images from the successful tests on social media, highlighting the achievement as a major boost to India's defence capabilities.
Alongside the BMD trials, India also successfully tested the Naval Anti-Ship Missile (Medium Range), a development expected to strengthen the country's maritime strike and coastal defence capabilities.
An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) is a long-range missile capable of travelling more than 5,500 kilometres, often carrying nuclear warheads. These missiles follow a trajectory into space before re-entering the atmosphere at extremely high speeds to strike their targets, making them among the world's most formidable strategic weapons.
