A man was allegedly shot dead by the family of a woman he had married for love in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district. The victim’s father was also seriously injured in the firing and remains in critical condition.
The incident took place in Panjwar village under the jurisdiction of Jhabal police station on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Amritpal Singh, who had married his maternal uncle’s daughter around one-and-a-half months ago.
According to preliminary information, a family dispute had reportedly been going on between Amritpal’s family and the woman’s relatives following the marriage.
On Sunday, some members of the woman’s family allegedly reached Amritpal’s house. An argument reportedly broke out between the two sides, following which the woman’s relatives allegedly opened fire at Amritpal and his father, Kashmir Singh.
Both father and son sustained bullet injuries and were initially taken to a hospital for treatment. Given their critical condition, they were later referred to a private hospital in Amritsar.
Amritpal succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His father, Kashmir Singh, continues to undergo treatment and is reported to be in critical condition.
Following the incident, Jhabal police reached the spot and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the firing. The deceased’s body has been taken into police custody for further legal proceedings.
No arrest has been reported so far. DSP Sukhbir Singh said the matter had come to the police’s attention and an investigation was underway. He added that action would be taken against those found responsible.
