Myanmar has discovered a gigantic natural ruby weighing around 11,000 carats in the world-famous Mogok gemstone region, a find that has dazzled jewelers and gemstone experts across the globe.

The ruby, weighing nearly 2.2 kilograms, is being described as one of the rarest and most valuable gemstone discoveries ever recorded due to its exceptional shine and quality.

The military-backed Myanmar government confirmed that the precious stone was extracted from mines located in the Mandalay region. Experts say finding a ruby of such enormous size is an event that happens “once in a century.”

According to historical records, this is the second-largest ruby ever discovered in Myanmar in terms of weight. The biggest ruby unearthed in the country was found in 1996 in the same Mogok region and weighed 21,450 carats. However, despite being smaller, the newly discovered ruby could surpass the older gem in terms of market value because of its superior quality and clarity.

State-run media outlet Global New Light of Myanmar reported that the gemstone was discovered shortly after the traditional New Year celebrations in mid-April. Myanmar’s President and military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing recently inspected the priceless ruby along with cabinet members in the capital city of Naypyidaw.

The discovery has once again highlighted Myanmar’s Mogok valley as one of the world’s richest and most legendary sources of high-quality rubies and gemstones.
