Punjab Newline, Karnal, July 13-

Heart valve disease is the 3rd biggest cause of death from cardiovascular disease, after heart attack & stroke. According to the World Health Organisation CVD is the leading cause of death worldwide taking 17.9 million lives annually.
The prevalence of valvular heart disease (VHD) is growing worldwide as a consequence of improved survival and the aging population. Rheumatic heart disease is the most common form of Valvular heart disease, affects
approximately 41 million people followed by calcific aortic stenosis and degenerative mitral valve disease in 9 and 24 million people, respectively.
Dr. Rajneesh Kapoor, Chairman of Interventional Cardiology at Medanta Hospital Gurugram informs “Management of Heart valve Disease was limited to the surgical approach in the past. Newer, less invasive percutaneous valvular repair or replacement procedures, such as tavr (transcatheter aortic valve Replacement) & mitral valve clipping, have been introduced in the past decade.”
He adds "We are performing 15 transcatheter aortic valve replacements every month, which is one of highest in India. We have a 98% treatment success & 100% accurate valve deployment rate.”
He says "Its effectiveness is evident from the data published in the Journal of The American Heart Association, where the age-adjusted death rate from heart Valve disease decreased by 21% (8.4 to 6.6) after non-surgical interventions in Treatment were introduced & better disease surveillance.
“Aortic stenosis if left untreated can cause immediate cardiac death. Approximately 30% of aortic stenosis patients are unfit for surgery & remain at risk of death. TAVR procedure can be lifesaving in such patients, there is - no cut, no blood loss, and discharge from the hospital in 2-3 days” he added.
