The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has decided to convene a special one-day session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly on May 1. The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.
According to sources, the special session is expected to take up several important issues. However, the announcement has also generated political attention across the state. The development comes amid allegations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding an “Operation Lotus,” under which the party claims that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to destabilize its government in Punjab.
The session is now being closely watched by political observers, as it is likely to witness discussions not only on legislative matters but also on the prevailing political climate in the state.
In a post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the session has been dedicated to workers on the occasion of International Labour Day. He described it as a tribute to labourers and artisans who contribute significantly to the country’s social and economic development.
He further stated that representatives of labour unions will be invited as special guests to the Assembly during the session. The House will also discuss the impact of proposed changes in the MNREGA scheme on workers, along with broader national and international challenges affecting the labour class.
The Chief Minister added that other necessary legislative business will be taken up as per procedures decided by the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly. He emphasized that the session will focus on strengthening democracy and taking important decisions for the state’s development.
The Chief Minister’s Office also confirmed that the one-day session will highlight the contribution of the working class in building the nation’s democratic and economic foundation. Additionally, concerns regarding the potential negative impact on workers due to changes in employment-related schemes, including discussions around proposed policy shifts, are also expected to be raised during the session.
