Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has said that Sri Akal Takht Sahib is supreme for all Sikhs and the state government will ensure a strict legal framework to protect the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He said there would be no compromise on the original spirit of the law, particularly its provisions for life imprisonment and heavy fines for those found guilty of desecration.
The Chief Minister said a seven-member committee constituted by the state government will hold discussions with the panel formed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to build consensus on the proposed amendments. The issue was discussed during a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence regarding concerns raised over certain provisions of the Jāgat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.
Mann directed the committee to carefully examine the proposed amendments and consider all suggestions and concerns raised during the consultations. He also stressed the need for continuous meetings with the panel constituted by Sri Akal Takht Sahib so that the amendments can be finalised through mutual consultation.
The Chief Minister said the original purpose of the legislation must remain intact and the amended law should provide stronger protection to the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji while addressing the sentiments of the Sikh community.
The state government has decided to amend the existing law instead of introducing an entirely new legislation. According to the government, this approach will allow the amended law to be sent to the Governor for approval while also addressing legal and constitutional concerns related to the legislation.
The seven-member committee includes former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Baba Sahib Singh representing Damdami Taksal, Sant Baba Sewa Singh of Rampur Khera, retired Justice Jaspal Singh, retired Justice Gurbir Singh, retired IPS officer Jatinder Singh Aulakh and legal officer Preet Inder Pal Singh. Damdami Taksal chief Sant Giani Harnam Singh Khalsa also participated in the meeting online.
Punjab Bureau of Investigation Director L.K. Yadav, advocates G.S. Ghumman and G.P.S. Ghumman and other senior officials were also present.
PCS officer Harjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the nodal officer to coordinate future meetings between the committees. The Chief Minister expressed hope that continued dialogue would lead to a positive outcome and help establish a stronger legal framework for protecting the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
