Punjab Youth Congress has elected a new state president, with Dhuri-based leader Shubham Sharma emerging victorious in the organizational elections. Sharma will now lead the party’s youth wing in the state, marking a significant leadership change as the Congress prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Sharma defeated his closest rival, Gagandeep Singh Jalalpur, by a margin of 3,883 votes. Jalalpur, son of former MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur, was backed by the camp of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Meanwhile, Navjeet Singh, son of Charanjit Singh Channi, also registered a win in the Youth Congress elections, strengthening the former chief minister’s presence within the party's youth structure.
To congratulate the newly elected president, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring personally visited Dhuri and extended his best wishes to Sharma on taking charge of the organization. Warring also congratulated other successful candidates and emphasized the importance of strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
Another contender, Karamvir Dhillon, finished third in the race. He was supported by the faction led by senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa and former MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu.
With the 2027 Assembly elections on the horizon, the Congress has placed a major bet on youth leadership. Party leaders believe young voters and emerging leaders will play a decisive role in shaping Punjab’s political landscape. The appointment of a new Youth Congress leadership is being seen as part of a broader strategy to energize the organization and strengthen its position ahead of the crucial electoral battle.
