Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passed away

AMRITSAR: Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passed away here on Sunday after prolonged illness. She was 77 years age.cremation will take place on Monday, November 22. She breathed her last at a hospital in Amritsar.

The singer was known for her long ‘hek’ that she could hold for about 45 seconds. She was one of the singers known for singing Jugni after Alam Lohar. She got married to Kirpal Bawa in 1968 and had three daughters with him.

She has been the recipient of various awards and accolades, such as the Shiromani Gayika Award by the Punjab Language Department, National Devi Ahilya Award and the State Award by the Punjab Government, among others.Amritsar Culture Manch expressed grave sorrow over the death of Gurmeet Kaur Bawa.

Gurmeet Bawa is a legendary Punjabi folk singer. She lost her mother when she was just 2 years old. She was born in an era where girls were not allowed to study but she changed the narrative as she became the first girl from her village to pass J.B.T. exams and became the first lady teacher in her village.

Meanwhile Jaswant Singh Jas president Amritsar Culture Manch has expressed grave sorrow over the death of Gurmeet Kaur Bawa and said death of the Nightingale of Punjab is a great loss to Punjab and Punjabi folk lovers worldwide’.

Mrs. Bawa will always be remembered for her contribution to folk singing, he added. Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family, relatives, friends and the artiste fraternity, Mr Jas prayed to the Almighty to grant them courage to bear the immense loss and eternal peace to the departed soul.
