A domestic dispute in Sukairi Jun village of Palampur subdivision in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district took a violent turn when a retired Army personnel allegedly opened fire at his own son with a licensed gun. The son narrowly escaped after taking cover behind a pillar, preventing what could have been a fatal incident.

According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday night. Complainant Surender Singh, a truck driver, said he had left for work on July 10 and returned home on the night of July 12. Soon after his return, an argument broke out between him and his wife. As the dispute escalated, his wife reportedly went to the room of Surender's father, Milap Chand.

Surender alleged that when he stepped outside a short while later, his father, Milap Chand, a retired Indian Army personnel, was standing in the veranda holding a licensed firearm. He allegedly fired a shot in Surender's direction.

Acting quickly, Surender took cover behind a pillar and escaped unhurt.

He further claimed that when his father attempted to reload the weapon, he managed to snatch the cartridge and throw it away before fleeing the scene. Surender then alerted the police by calling the 112 emergency helpline.

A police team reached the spot immediately, detained the accused, and seized the licensed firearm along with its licence.

Police have registered a case against Milap Chand under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 27 of the Arms Act.

Kangra Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bir Bahadur said the preliminary investigation indicates the incident stemmed from a family dispute. Police are also examining whether the shot was intentionally aimed at the victim or fired into the air. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
