The death toll in the tunnel collapse at the under-construction Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim's Namchi district has risen to 20, while five workers remain trapped as rescue operations continue.
The accident occurred on Monday after a suspected methane gas explosion inside the tunnel, leading to a collapse and filling the area with dense smoke and toxic gases. According to officials, 27 workers were inside the tunnel at the time of the incident. Two managed to escape, while 25 were trapped.
Authorities have confirmed 20 deaths so far, with 12 bodies recovered during ongoing search and rescue efforts. Officials fear the toll could rise further as operations continue.
The tunnel is part of NHPC's Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project and was being built to channel high-pressure water from the reservoir to the powerhouse. Rescue operations have been hampered by the presence of toxic gases, with some rescue personnel reportedly experiencing dizziness and losing consciousness while attempting to reach those trapped.
