MAUR( Bathinda): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today said rightful agitations always succeeded and the success of the Kisan Andolan represented the victory of each and every household in Punjab.

The SAD President, who attended the ceremony to mark the culmination of the Akhand Path on the occasion of Gurpurb at Tittarsar Sahib gurdwara here, said Punjabis had proved their resolve by uniting as one against the black laws which forced the central government to repeal them. He also thanked the almighty for the victory, saying “we have been blessed by the almighty’s beneficence”.

Mr Sukhbir Badal said the victory had however come at a great loss. “We have lost over 700 farmers who were martyred during the course of this agitation. Farmers braved all odds during the last one year be it the inclement weather to pressure to lift their dharna. They however stood their ground and continued the democratic protest for their rights which has been recognized as one of the most peaceful protests the world over”.

While speaking about the SAD, Mr Badal said the party had always stood up for the rights of farmers and khet mazdoor. “We have led several agitations to secure the rights of farmers and under-privileged sections of society. The SAD has supported the Kisan Andolan to the hilt and even quit the government as well as the NDA to protest against the BJP led union government’s decision to thrust them on farmers. The SAD is also known to be the only party which has taken pro-farmer and pro-poor decisions when in government ensuring free power facility to farmers or starting unique welfare schemes like aata-daal, shagun and old age pension”.

Mr Badal said “we never make a commitment we cannot meet”. He said the SAD was committed to implementing the 13 point programme granting an allowance of Rs 2,000 per month to women heads of families, free medical insurance of Rs 10 lakh per annum to each family, Rs 10 lakh student loan for higher studies, 33 per cent reservation in all private and government institutions for students from government schools and 75 per cent assured employment to Punjabis in industries in the State.

Earlier the SAD President along with Maur party candidate Jagmeet Singh Brar wished Punjabis on the sacred occasion of Gurpurb and prayed that Punjab and the country touched new heights in progress and prosperity. Mr Badal also prayed for peace and communal harmony in the State.

The event was attended by various Akali leaders including Jagdeep Singh Nakai, Parkash Bhatti, Balkar Singh, Ripjit Singh Brar, Prem Arora, Darshan Singh Kotfatta, Dr Nishan Singh and Gardaur Singh.
