A top commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), identified as Hashim Musa, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district late Tuesday night.
The encounter took place in the Korag area of Yusmarg, where the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF had launched a joint search operation following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists.
According to security officials, the operation turned into an encounter after terrorists opened fire on the security forces during the search. In the ensuing gunfight, one terrorist was killed.
Officials identified the slain terrorist as Musa, although different reports have referred to him by different names, including Suleman Shah alias Musa, Fauji Musa and Mohammad Asif alias Hashim Musa.
The Indian Army has termed the operation ‘Operation Korag’. A search operation is still underway in the area as security forces have received inputs about the possible presence of more terrorists.
At least five terrorists have been killed in encounters or security operations in Budgam and Udhampur between September 1 and 30.
On September 5, a terrorist identified as Yasir was killed in Budgam. On September 17, two Pakistani terrorists, identified as Saddam and Mustafa, were killed in Udhampur. The decomposed body of another terrorist was also recovered in the region earlier this month.
