A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured in a horrific road accident late at night on the Ludhiana-Bathinda Highway near the main guard room of the Indian Air Force Station in Halwara.

The accident occurred when a speeding 16-wheeler trailer rammed into the couple’s motorcycle from behind. The impact was so severe that the trailer dragged the bike for a considerable distance.

The victims, identified as Jeet Singh and his wife Mamta Devi, were residents of New Abadi, Abbuval Road, Akalgarh, near Sudhar Bazaar. The couple was returning home on their motorcycle after purchasing vegetables and other household essentials from the market.

When they began turning at a road cut near the main guard room of the Halwara Air Force Station, the speeding trailer approaching from behind hit their motorcycle, leaving both seriously injured.

The accident triggered panic at the spot. With the help of local residents, Jeet Singh arranged a vehicle and rushed his blood-soaked wife to a government hospital. However, doctors examined Mamta Devi and declared her dead.

Mamta Devi reportedly worked as a cleaner to help support her family. Her death has plunged the family into grief, leaving her two sons without their mother.

Sudhar police station in-charge Kulwinder Singh said the trailer driver fled the scene after the accident but was subsequently arrested with the help of local residents.

The accused has been identified as Prem Kumar, a resident of Ward No. 3 in Sardulgarh, Rajasthan. Police have also seized the 16-wheeler trailer involved in the accident.

According to police, Mamta Devi’s body has been sent to the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana for a post-mortem examination. The body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem on Tuesday.
