Big Price Tags, But Can Young Players Handle the Heat?
Ahead of IPL 2026, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has delivered a strong message—handling pressure is the most crucial factor in the tournament. He emphasized that the IPL is not just about talent, but also a true test of mental strength, especially for young players who are bought for huge sums in the auction.
This season of the Indian Premier League will see uncapped players Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma in the spotlight after Chennai Super Kings signed them for âč14 crore each. With such massive price tags come equally high expectations, making pressure management the biggest challenge.
Pathan pointed out that in the IPL, a player can be a hero one day and fade away the next. He highlighted the importance of crucial match situations, particularly in the final overs, where players are tested the most—whether with the bat or ball under intense pressure.
He also stressed that a player’s true character is revealed not just in success, but in how they respond to failure. According to him, the ability to regroup, rebuild confidence, and return stronger after setbacks is what separates great players from the rest.
Meanwhile, former India opener Aakash Chopra spoke about the off-field challenges that come with the IPL’s massive scale. He noted that the league creates a larger-than-life environment where young players suddenly become stars, surrounded by media attention, advertisements, fans, and constant public interaction.
Chopra explained that while players are trained to perform on the field, they are rarely prepared to handle these off-field distractions. Over the course of the 8–9 week IPL season, this continuous attention can become overwhelming and may impact performance if not managed carefully.
