Veteran cricketer calls the honour special for his family, says his commitment to Team India remains unchanged
Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has expressed pride and gratitude after being honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards. Calling it a memorable moment for himself and his family, Rohit said the recognition has only strengthened his resolve to continue performing and winning matches for the country.
Reacting to the honour, Rohit thanked the Government of India and everyone who supported him throughout his long and eventful cricketing journey. In a video message shared by Doordarshan Sports on X, the senior batter underlined that playing for India and contributing to the team’s success will always remain his top priority.
“Receiving the Padma Shri is a very special moment for me and my family. I thank the Government of India for this honour. I am also grateful to all those people who have played an important role in my career. My effort to win matches and trophies for my country will always continue. Thank you. Jai Hind,” Rohit said.
Rohit Sharma made his international debut in 2007 and over the last 19 years has established himself as one of the pillars of Indian cricket. Known for his ability to score big runs and lead from the front, Rohit has been a consistent performer across all formats and a calm, successful leader for the national side.
His captaincy tenure has been marked by significant achievements on the global stage. Under Rohit’s leadership, India clinched the T20 World Cup in 2024 after defeating South Africa in the final, ending a long wait for an ICC title in the shortest format. The following year, India added another major trophy to their cabinet by winning the Champions Trophy in 2025, further enhancing Rohit’s credentials as a captain.
As a batter, Rohit’s numbers reflect his impact on the game. In Test cricket, he has scored over 4,300 runs in 67 matches, including 12 centuries. In One-Day Internationals, he has amassed more than 11,500 runs in 282 matches, with 33 hundreds to his name. In T20 Internationals, Rohit has scored over 4,231 runs, including five centuries, making him one of the most successful players in the format.
Although Rohit has retired from Test and T20I cricket, he continues to represent India in ODIs. With his focus on the 2027 World Cup, the Padma Shri stands as a recognition of his achievements and an inspiration for the journey ahead.
