The Indian Premier League 2026 has kicked off in spectacular fashion, creating history with a record-breaking opening weekend. The tournament reached over 515 million viewers across television and digital platforms, marking the biggest-ever start in IPL history. This remarkable surge highlights the ever-growing passion for cricket among fans.

According to broadcaster JioStar, the first two matches generated a combined watch-time of 32.6 billion minutes, reflecting a 26 percent increase compared to the previous season. Connected TV (CTV) viewership witnessed a strong 30 percent growth, while concurrency — the number of viewers watching simultaneously — jumped by an impressive 61 percent. Traditional television also saw a significant boost, with a 24 percent rise in ratings.

A major highlight of this season has been the enhanced and interactive viewing experience. The Hindi feed on connected TV, featuring former cricket stars like Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, and Irfan Pathan, has further strengthened fan engagement.

IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal described the opening as boundless encouraging, emphasizing that the league continues to set new benchmarks in both sport and fan connection. Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia credited the deep emotional bond of fans with the tournament’s continued success.

With two thrilling high-scoring matches setting the tone, IPL 2026 is now on track to become the biggest season ever in terms of viewership and overall engagement.
