Former India head coach and ‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket receives heartfelt tributes from players, BCCI, and IPL franchises
One of the most respected figures in Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid, celebrated his 53rd birthday on Sunday, with warm wishes and tributes pouring in from across the cricketing fraternity. The former India head coach, fondly known as ‘The Wall’, was congratulated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), former players, and several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises for his immense contribution to the game.
Rahul Dravid made his international debut in 1996 and went on to represent India in 164 Test matches, 344 One-Day Internationals, and one T20 International. Over the course of his illustrious career, he scored more than 24,000 international runs, establishing himself as one of the finest batters in the history of the sport. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2013 but continued to serve Indian cricket in various leadership roles.
Dravid took charge as the head coach of Team India in November 2021 and remained in the role until June 2024. Under his calm and disciplined leadership, India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and reached the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, further cementing his legacy as a successful coach.
The BCCI shared a post highlighting his remarkable journey, stating, “509 international matches, 24,208 international runs, 48 international centuries, and winning head coach of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Wishing Rahul Dravid a very happy birthday.”
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh praised Dravid’s composure under pressure, calling it a privilege to have played alongside him. Shikhar Dhawan also lauded Dravid’s calm demeanor and sharp cricketing mind.
IPL franchises joined the celebrations as well. Royal Challengers Bengaluru remembered him as their first captain, Chennai Super Kings described his legacy as unbreakable, while Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians shared special moments honoring the legendary cricketer.
Rahul Dravid’s journey as a player, leader, and coach continues to inspire generations, making him a true icon of the game.
