On his visit to New Zealand, Punjab Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa met Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown to discuss how Punjab can position itself as a competitive destination for high-value industries such as information technology.
Bajwa highlighted Punjab’s strengths – including its skilled youth, existing infrastructure, and international airports in Mohali and Amritsar – while also seeking insights into how cities like Auckland have built successful technology-driven economies.
The discussions covered potential collaboration in talent exchange, cross-border business partnerships, and research in emerging technologies. Bajwa said that such learnings will be crucial in shaping policies if the Congress Party forms the state government in 2027, with the aim of creating sustainable, high-wage jobs while maintaining support for agriculture.
“Punjab’s future lies in both preserving our agricultural heritage and opening new economic pathways. By engaging with global cities, we can learn models that can be adapted to our own strengths,” Bajwa said.
Mayor Brown, who visited India earlier this year, expressed interest in exploring practical linkages between New Zealand and Punjab. Both sides agreed to keep channels open for further discussions and cooperation.
Bajwa’s meetings in New Zealand are part of a wider effort to promote Punjab’s potential abroad while gathering ideas that could shape a long-term economic vision for the state.
