A woman died while her husband remains in critical condition after the couple allegedly consumed sulphas at their paying guest accommodation in Zirakpur, Mohali, following an alleged overseas job fraud involving ₹36 lakh.

The deceased has been identified as Gagandeep Kaur, a resident of Sekhan village in Barnala district. Her husband, Hakam Singh, a resident of Mahmadpur in Barnala, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The couple had a love marriage and had been living in a PG accommodation in Zirakpur for the past few months. According to police, a suicide note recovered from the spot contains allegations of financial fraud against an agent who was reportedly Hakam Singh’s former schoolmate.

In the note, Hakam Singh allegedly stated that the couple had trusted the agent because of their previous acquaintance. The agent allegedly took ₹18 lakh each from the husband and wife, totalling ₹36 lakh, promising to send them abroad. However, the couple was allegedly neither sent abroad nor refunded the money.

The note reportedly states that the couple had been under severe mental stress after failing to recover the money. On Friday, they allegedly consumed sulphas at the PG. Gagandeep Kaur died, while Hakam Singh was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.

Police have initiated an investigation and are recording statements from the family members. Officials are also verifying the allegations made in the suicide note, the alleged ₹36 lakh financial transaction and the role of the agent.
