Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu has welcomed the Punjab government’s latest notification expanding the jurisdiction of the Mohali Municipal Corporation, calling it a significant victory for the local residents. He said the inclusion of new areas under the MC limits will finally provide people with essential civic services that they had been deprived of for years.
Addressing a large gathering at the Phase-1 office—where residents had come to express their gratitude—Sidhu said the decision is a major setback for those who had repeatedly blocked the expansion of municipal boundaries for their own vested interests. He emphasised that the long-pending demand of the people has now been acknowledged by the authorities.
Sidhu pointed out that even after the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the state government to take action, the previous notification issued in place of the 2021 resolution deliberately left out important localities, including Badmajra, Balongi and TDI. This exclusion, he said, had sparked widespread public disappointment and forced the government to reconsider its stance.
He noted that while the revised notification has now included most left-out areas, Badmajra is still outside the Corporation’s limits. Calling this “unacceptable,” Sidhu confirmed that legal measures will continue until Badmajra is also officially added to the municipal framework, ensuring equal development for all.
Sidhu highlighted that the newly added areas will now receive key civic amenities such as sewerage systems, clean drinking water, electricity supply and other public welfare services. These improvements, he said, will significantly enhance the quality of life and protect residents from exploitation by private developers who previously operated unchecked due to the absence of municipal governance.
Acknowledging collective efforts, Sidhu praised Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu for his persistent role in getting the resolutions passed in both 2021 and 2025, ultimately compelling the government to move forward with the expansion.
Congratulating the residents of the newly included areas, Balbir Sidhu reaffirmed his continued commitment to fight for their rights and ensure balanced development across Mohali.
