Odisha to host historic global championship as India steps onto the world athletics stage

India has achieved a major sporting milestone as Odisha has been selected to host the prestigious World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028, marking the first time the country will stage a global track and field championship of this scale. The decision was taken during the 240th council meeting of World Athletics held in Torun, Poland.

The championship is scheduled to take place from March 3 to 5, 2028, and is expected to bring together top athletes from across the globe, showcasing elite indoor track and field performances. This landmark achievement highlights India’s growing influence in international sports and its readiness to host world-class events.

Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan welcomed the announcement, calling it a “big step forward in India’s Olympic journey.” He emphasized that hosting such a prestigious event reflects the country’s rising stature and commitment to strengthening its sporting ecosystem. Dhawan’s remarks underline the broader vision of positioning India as a serious contender not just in participation but also in global sports leadership.

Odisha, which has already earned recognition for successfully hosting international sporting events, including hockey tournaments, will once again be in the spotlight. The state’s modern infrastructure, strong administrative support, and experience in organizing large-scale competitions played a crucial role in securing the hosting rights.

This development is expected to boost athletics at the grassroots level in India, inspiring young talent and increasing public interest in track and field sports. Experts believe that such global exposure will also enhance training standards, facilities, and overall competitiveness of Indian athletes on the world stage.

With the countdown to 2028 now underway, preparations are likely to begin soon, aiming to deliver a world-class experience for athletes and fans alike. India’s successful bid signals not just a hosting opportunity, but a powerful statement of its ambition to become a global sporting powerhouse.
