In a major anti-corruption action in Haryana’s Karnal district, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a patwari in Assandh while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹15,000. The accused was caught red-handed during a trap operation conducted by the ACB team.
According to officials, the accused patwari had demanded money from a man for correcting his name in the jamabandi (land record). The complainant alleged that the patwari told him that the bribe amount also had to be shared with the Kanungo and Tehsildar.
The complainant, Gurbaksh Singh, a resident of Jalmana village, stated that he had purchased 2 kanal land from his brother several years ago. His name was initially recorded in the jamabandi, but it disappeared after new land records were prepared. When he approached patwari Vijay Veer to restore his name in the records, the official allegedly demanded ₹25,000 as a bribe.
Gurbaksh Singh said he had been making repeated visits to the patwari office for the correction work. During one of the meetings, the accused allegedly told him, “My share in this is very small. The Kanungo and Tehsildar also have to be paid.”
Later, the deal was reportedly settled at ₹15,000. Troubled by the repeated demands, Gurbaksh Singh approached the ACB and lodged a complaint.
After verifying the complaint, the ACB team prepared a trap operation. Officials applied a special chemical to the currency notes and sent the complainant to the patwari office with the marked cash, while the team remained stationed nearby.
As soon as Gurbaksh Singh handed over the money to patwari Vijay Veer, the ACB team raided the office and caught him on the spot. The officials also recovered the ₹15,000 bribe amount from his possession.
A case has been registered against the accused in Karnal, and the ACB is currently questioning him further in connection with the matter.
