Says, Congress Will Stand by the People and Provide All Possible Support
Appeal : Punjab Govt should resolve the matter; CM Mann must intervene personally.
Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh-
All India Congress Committee Secretary and MLA Padma Shri Pargat Singh has made it clear that the Congress Party will not allow the demolition of 700–800 homes in Ambedkar Nagar, Jalandhar, under any circumstances. The Congress Party will extend every possible support, including legal assistance, to the affected families.
He urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to personally intervene and ensure justice for the residents. Pargat Singh added that, if necessary, he would personally meet the Chief Minister to discuss the issue.
Pargat Singh stated that the previous Congress government had introduced a policy providing that if any resident has been occupying government land for over 12 years, they should be granted ownership rights in exchange for a nominal charge. The Congress government was in the process of implementing this policy, but unfortunately, the government changed before it could be enforced. The current Aam Aadmi Party government has failed to adopt this policy, depriving thousands of people of its benefits. The former Education Minister emphasized that this is not just about 700–800 houses—it concerns the livelihoods of countless families. He said such mass eviction will never be allowed. Although the residents are living on land belonging to the electricity department, many of them have been residing there for nearly 70 years. Some houses were constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, while most were built from the hard-earned savings of the people.
Pargat Singh asserted that instead of evicting these families, the AAP government should grant them ownership rights against a small payment. He clarified that he does not support illegal encroachments but believes that uprooting families after decades of residence is unjust. The Congress Party will continue to stand firmly with the people until they receive justice and will assist them in their legal battle as well. He categorically stated that Ambedkar Nagar will not be allowed to become another Latifpura.
