WPL 2026: Mumbai Indians Aim to Defend Title, Harmanpreet Kaur Reiterates Winning Mindset

Punjab Newsline, Sports:

MI captain confident of retaining trophy, says team’s approach remains unchanged with added new talent

Ahead of the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur has made it clear that the team’s mindset remains unchanged, with the sole objective of winning the trophy once again. Harmanpreet stated that MI will step onto the field with the same winning mentality that helped them succeed in previous editions of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in WPL history, having clinched the title twice in 2023 and 2025. Continuing their strong approach off the field, MI had an impressive mega auction ahead of the new season. The franchise managed to retain its core group of players while also strengthening the squad by bringing in several promising Indian domestic cricketers, adding depth and balance to the team.

Harmanpreet Kaur highlighted the rapid growth of women’s cricket in India, noting that the talent pool has expanded significantly over the years. She recalled that a few years ago, the selection options were limited to around 20–25 players, but now there is an abundance of quality talent across the country. She expressed satisfaction with the inclusion of new players, stating that increased competition only helps improve the overall standard of the team.

The MI skipper also spoke fondly about Mumbai, calling it a special city that has always brought her positive results. She believes the upcoming season could be particularly special for both her and the team.

The forthcoming WPL season holds great importance for players from all teams, as strong performances could earn them a place in their respective national squads for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England in June this year. Harmanpreet herself will be under close watch after leading India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in November 2025. With momentum on her side, all eyes will be on the Indian captain and Mumbai Indians as they aim for WPL glory and prepare for global success.
