Indian Women’s Team Sharpens All-Round Skills at National Camp Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Indian women’s hockey team’s star forward Navneet Kaur has underlined that modern-day hockey requires attacking players to contribute equally in defense, as the team intensifies preparations at the ongoing national camp in Hyderabad ahead of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2026.

Speaking about the changing demands of the game, Navneet said that being a striker today is no longer limited to scoring goals. She stressed that defensive skills such as tackling, pressing opponents, and winning the ball back have become equally important. According to her, quick ball recovery gives the team a major advantage and helps control the tempo of the match.

The Indian team is currently preparing for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifier, scheduled to be held in Hyderabad, Telangana, from March 8 to 14. The tournament is crucial, as the top three teams will secure qualification for the 2026 Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup. Navneet reiterated that the team’s focus is clear and uncompromising — to qualify for the World Cup and deliver strong performances throughout the competition.

Sharing her views on the national camp, Navneet said the environment has been highly positive and competitive. With the arrival of new head coach Sjoerd Marijne, the quality and structure of training sessions have improved significantly. She highlighted that the players are benefiting from the clarity provided by the coaching staff, which has helped the team work more efficiently towards common goals.

Navneet praised Marijne’s direct communication style, stating that it leaves no room for confusion. She explained that the coach clearly outlines expectations, areas of improvement, and the kind of performance required on the pitch, which helps players stay focused and accountable.

The forward also noted that familiarity between the coach and several senior players has played a key role in helping the squad settle quickly. This mutual understanding, she said, has accelerated the team’s progress and strengthened overall coordination.

Reflecting on her recent success, Navneet spoke about leading SG Pipers to the Women’s Hero Hockey India League title. She said the exposure of playing alongside international players has had a positive impact on the entire group, especially younger players, whose confidence levels have visibly improved upon returning to the national camp.

Navneet concluded by highlighting the evolved mindset within the team, stating that players are eager to experiment, learn, and continuously push their limits — a promising sign ahead of a major international challenge.
