Indian boxers delivered strong displays across both men’s and women’s categories, with several athletes sealing semifinal berths and keeping medal hopes high heading into the decisive stages.
In the women’s competition, Nitu and Preeti led the charge with commanding victories in their respective weight categories. Competing in the 51kg division, Nitu was in complete control as she defeated Canada’s McKenzie Wright by a unanimous 5:0 decision to book her place in the semifinals. In the 54kg category, Preeti produced a clinical performance against Spain’s Maria Gonzalez, forcing the bout to be abandoned in Round 3 after dominating the contest with relentless pressure and sharp combinations.
Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Santiago Nieva, the Indian women’s team has now guaranteed 12 medals at the tournament. Poonam (54kg) added to the tally with an emphatic 5:0 win over Thailand’s Natnicha Chongprongklang. Priya (60kg) registered a unanimous victory against Spain’s Laura Galano, while Pranjal (65kg) outboxed Czech boxer Viktorie Jilkova to advance comfortably. Kajal (65kg) secured a hard-fought 4:1 win over Kazakhstan’s Akbar Ichshanova in a closely contested bout to move into the semifinals.
