Shreyas Iyer’s fitness creates uncertainty at No.4, all-rounder slots still undecided
The Indian team for the ODI series against New Zealand has been announced. Captain Shubman Gill will lead the side, with Shreyas Iyer making a return to the squad as vice-captain. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has also been included in the team. However, Shreyas Iyer is yet to receive full fitness clearance, making his inclusion in the playing XI doubtful.
Looking at India’s probable playing XI, the top order appears to be almost settled. With Shubman Gill’s return, India’s opening combination is expected to be fixed once again, with Gill likely to open alongside former captain Rohit Sharma. At number three, Virat Kohli remains the automatic choice. Kohli is in excellent form and has scored 50-plus runs in each of his last four ODI innings, including two centuries.
The biggest concern lies in the middle order, particularly at the number four position. If Shreyas Iyer is ruled out due to fitness issues, the team management will need to look at alternative options. In addition, there is still a lack of clarity over the selection of all-rounders, as the team management aims to strike the right balance in the playing XI.
Overall, while India’s top order looks strong and settled, questions remain over the middle order and the combination of all-rounders. The ODI series against New Zealand will be a crucial opportunity for Team India to test combinations and fine-tune their strategy ahead of upcoming challenges.
