University Clinches First Runner-Up Trophy; Tamanna Named Best Boxer of the Tournament
The women’s boxing team of Lovely Professional University (LPU) delivered an outstanding performance at the All India Inter‑University Women’s Boxing Championship 2025–26, securing the First Runner-Up Trophy and bringing pride to the university. The championship was hosted at the LPU campus and witnessed intense competition among some of the best university boxers from across the country.
The prestigious event saw participation from 162 universities across India, with a total of 856 women boxers competing in ten weight categories. After several thrilling bouts, Panjab University emerged as the Overall Champion, while Guru Kashi University secured the Overall Second Runner-Up position. Despite the tough competition, LPU’s athletes displayed remarkable determination and skill, earning the overall First Runner-Up trophy.
Among the standout performers for LPU, Naina won the gold medal in the Women’s Light Heavy (75–80 kg) category, while Tamanna secured another gold medal in the Women’s Fly (48–51 kg) category. Nisha added to the medal tally by winning a silver medal in the Women’s Welter (60–65 kg) category, and Savita Khatri claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s Middle (70–75 kg) category.
Tamanna’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament earned her the prestigious “Best Boxer of the Tournament” award. Her impressive technique, agility and dominance in the ring made her one of the most talked-about athletes of the championship.
Congratulating the players, Dr. Col. Rashmi Mittal, Pro-Chancellor of LPU, praised the athletes for their discipline, resilience and competitive spirit. She encouraged them to continue striving for excellence and to uphold the values of dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship that define true champions.
The event was also attended by Ombeer Hooda, Director of the Tournament, and Dr. Sorabh Lakhanpal, Executive Dean at LPU, who appreciated the high level of competition and the enthusiasm shown by the participating athletes.
The championship also served as an important platform to identify promising talent for the national university sports circuit. The top eight players from the event have qualified for the upcoming Khelo India University Games, where they will get the opportunity to represent their universities at one of India’s premier multi-sport competitions.
This remarkable success reflects the strong sports ecosystem at LPU, which provides Olympic-level infrastructure, world-class coaching, sports scholarships, modern training facilities and opportunities to compete at national and international levels.
