Major Terror Plot Foiled Ahead of R-Day, BKI Operative Arrested

Punjab Newsline,Chandigarh :

Hand grenade and Glock pistol recovered in Amritsar; planned attack on security establishment averted

Ahead of Republic Day, Punjab Police have successfully foiled a major terror plot, averting a possible attack on a security establishment and reinforcing the state’s security apparatus. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations, the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar, busted a terror module linked to the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

Disclosing the development on Friday, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said that an imminent terror attack had been successfully averted with the arrest of a BKI operative. The arrested accused has been identified as Sharanpreet Singh, a resident of village Dinewal in Tarn Taran district. From his possession, police recovered one P86 hand grenade, one 9mm Glock pistol, five live cartridges and around 65 grams of ICE drug.

DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused was working at the behest of foreign-based BKI operatives, including Nishan Singh alias Nishan Jaurrian, Adeshbir Singh alias Adesh Jamarai and Simranjit Singh alias Simma Deol. These operatives have been actively involved in orchestrating disruptive and terror-related activities in Punjab with the aim of creating fear and panic. He added that further investigations are underway to establish both forward and backward linkages of the terror network.

Sharing operational details, AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann said that acting on specific intelligence inputs, teams of SSOC Amritsar arrested Sharanpreet Singh from the Bundala Morh area on the Amritsar–Tarn Taran highway. During the operation, a Glock pistol along with ammunition and 65 grams of ICE drug were recovered from his possession.

During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that his handlers had recently arranged the delivery of a hand grenade, which he had concealed near a church located along the Amritsar–Tarn Taran highway. Acting swiftly on the disclosure, the SSOC team took the accused to the identified location and recovered one P86 hand grenade from the spot pointed out by him.

The AIG further revealed that the probe has established that Sharanpreet Singh had joined the terror network through his cousin, Simma Deol. On the directions of his handlers, the accused was involved in transporting consignments of explosives and weapons, besides handling illegal funds linked to the terror module.

In this regard, an FIR No. 02 dated 21.01.2026 was initially registered at Police Station SSOC Amritsar under Section 22 of the NDPS Act, Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Relevant sections of the Explosives Act were later added following the recovery of the hand grenade.
