Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife, Dr Gurpreet Kaur, has issued a legal notice to retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Ranjit Singh after he allegedly accused her of seeking a ₹5 crore bribe to suppress a rape case.
In the notice, Dr Gurpreet Kaur has demanded an unconditional public apology within 24 hours, warning that failure to do so will result in criminal defamation proceedings.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the matter and issued notices to the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), directing them to investigate the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur has categorically rejected the allegations, describing them as “false, baseless and politically motivated.” She stated that the claims of bribery and interference in a rape case have no factual basis and were made with malicious intent to tarnish her reputation.
The legal notice specifically asks retired Justice Ranjit Singh to withdraw his statements and publicly apologise within 24 hours of receiving the notice.
It further states that if no apology is issued within the stipulated time, criminal defamation proceedings will be initiated against him.
The notice also refers to the alleged political links of retired Justice Ranjit Singh, claiming that he is related to senior Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira, and suggests that the allegations may be politically motivated.
