Over 20,000 Personnel Deployed, 50 Drug Smugglers Arrested During Anti-Drug Drive
On the eve of Republic Day, Punjab Police carried out extensive flag marches in sensitive areas across the state to ensure peaceful celebrations, following directives from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The security preparations come as part of the state’s efforts to maintain law and order during the national event.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav instructed Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to implement foolproof security measures in their jurisdictions. All Station House Officers (SHOs) and Gazetted Officers have been directed to remain on duty in the field until the conclusion of Republic Day events.
Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla highlighted that the flag marches, led by CPs and SSPs, were conducted in vulnerable and high-risk areas of the districts. The exercise aimed to enhance public confidence while preparing police personnel to respond swiftly to any untoward incidents.
Shukla added that security across the state has been significantly strengthened, with more than 20,000 police personnel deployed to monitor anti-social elements and ensure smooth celebrations. Additionally, CPs and SSPs were asked to carry out special Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) under SP-rank supervision at crowded places such as railway stations, bus stands, markets, shopping malls, and public parks. All police personnel were instructed to maintain a friendly and courteous approach while frisking individuals during these operations.
In parallel, Punjab Police continued its anti-drug drive “Yudh Nashian Virudh” for the 330th consecutive day. On Sunday, 50 drug smugglers were apprehended, with authorities recovering 150 grams of heroin and 376 intoxicant tablets and capsules. The total number of drug smugglers arrested under this campaign has now reached 46,443 in just 330 days.
As part of rehabilitation efforts, the Punjab Police also persuaded eight individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment. The state police remain committed to curbing drug trafficking and ensuring public safety while delivering a secure environment for Republic Day celebrations.
