Punjab is set to strengthen its push towards crop diversification and sustainable agriculture with the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Basmati, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced during his ongoing visit to the Netherlands.

The proposed centre, secured through efforts of the Chief Minister, aims to improve farmers’ incomes, promote basmati cultivation, and reduce dependence on the traditional wheat-paddy cycle, which has put pressure on the state’s natural resources.

CM Mann said Punjab farmers have contributed significantly to national food security but have also overused land and water resources, making diversification essential for long-term sustainability. He stressed the need to shift towards modern and profitable farming systems.

During his visit to a leading agri-food facility in Rotterdam, discussions were held on sustainable farming practices and global expansion of Punjab’s basmati rice. A pilot project on low-pesticide cultivation and assured procurement was also agreed upon, along with plans to set up the Centre of Excellence in Punjab.

The Chief Minister highlighted that declining farm profitability and stagnating crop productivity have created urgent challenges for the agriculture sector. He emphasized the importance of reducing pesticide use and meeting international quality standards to expand basmati exports.

CM Mann also called for stronger collaboration between Dutch institutions and Punjab Agricultural University in areas such as precision farming, research, and innovation. He expressed Punjab’s interest in adopting advanced agricultural technologies including AI, drones, automation, and data-driven farming techniques.

He further showcased interest in the Dutch model of floriculture, particularly the Aalsmeer flower auction system, to develop efficient agri-value chains and improve farmer earnings in Punjab.

Reaffirming the state’s investment-friendly approach, CM Mann said Punjab offers a strong ecosystem for agribusiness and invited Dutch companies to participate in upcoming industrial and agri-tech initiatives. He also highlighted new policy frameworks and digital platforms aimed at ensuring transparent and time-bound approvals for investors.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Punjab is committed to building a technology-driven, sustainable, and globally integrated agricultural economy focused on long-term farmer prosperity.
