A high-profile extortion, intimidation and shooting case in Calgary, Canada, has raised concerns within the Punjabi community after police arrested and later released 29-year-old Punjabi-origin woman Kanupreet Kaur. She has been ordered to appear in court on October 6.
According to Calgary Police, Kaur is accused of providing a victim’s private and confidential information to a gangster who later allegedly threatened the woman and orchestrated a shooting at her home. Investigators claim the information helped suspects target the victim and her family.
Police said action has already been taken against three individuals, including a minor, in connection with the case. Authorities are also searching for Calgary resident Tanveer Singh, who is wanted on a warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle valued at more than CAD 5,000. Investigators believe the vehicle was used during the shooting incident.
The case dates back to March 25, when the victim received threatening WhatsApp messages and voice notes from an unknown number demanding a large sum of money. While police have not disclosed the amount sought, investigators found that the suspects already possessed detailed personal information about the victim, including her name, home address, business details and family information.
Approximately 12 hours after the threats were issued, gunmen allegedly opened fire on the victim’s residence before fleeing in a vehicle. No injuries were reported in the incident.
During the investigation, police reviewed surveillance footage and digital evidence to identify the vehicle used in the crime and trace those involved. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested for allegedly acting as an intermediary between the victim and the extortionists and for involvement in extortion-related offences. The minor was later released.
Kaur, a resident of Chestermere, was subsequently arrested. Police allege she shared the victim’s personal information with other suspects, enabling them to intimidate and threaten the victim and her family. She has since been released pending her court appearance, while investigators continue examining her alleged role and connections to other suspects.
Police statistics highlight the growing seriousness of extortion-related crimes in Calgary. Since April 2025, authorities have recorded 51 extortion cases in the city, including 19 linked directly to shootings. Police have so far laid 59 charges against 19 accused individuals connected to Punjab in these investigations.
